With the advent of pneumatic tyres a change took place, which was for the better. The tyre industry saw a rapid growth potential and turned into a big time business in a span of few years. The pneumatic tyres were a welcome addition to the already plagued vehicle industry.
The initial success in two-wheeler segment led to the development of pneumatic tyres for the four-wheeler vehicles. The growing demand which kept on increasing day by day then led to the development of tubeless tyres and with it brought about a similar revolution of sorts that had occurred when pneumatic tyres were first developed.
The tubeless tyres are simply pneumatic tyres that are free from any additional butyl rubber tubes that may be required in other kind of tyres such as the tube tyres.
Traditionally the pneumatic tyres require an inner tube made of butyl rubber that act as a protection and needs to be filled with appropriate air pressure to ensure the tyres proper alignment. Such a design has its own demerits as the damage to the tube caused the tyre to deflate and rendered the vehicle unusable until the repair work is undertaken.
But in the present scenario the tubeless tyre have started to gain in popularity and designers as well as the manufacturers are easily getting attracted to its features. The main reasons why the tubeless tyre have taken everyone by storm is due to
• Tubeless tyres require very less time for fitting and this can be done quite easily
• The inner lining of tubeless tyres are so designed that they are able to self-seal small incisions that may occur within the tyre.
The inner lining of the tubeless tyres is of prime importance as their function is similar to that of traditional tyre tubes, which prevented the air to escape from the tyres. The linings form a unit with the carcass and thus are under no tensional stress unlike the tubes. Small incisions or damages don’t affect the functioning of tubeless tyres and the immediate failure of tyre pressure is a distinct possibility and allows some time before the complete loss of tyre pressure. In certain instances of incision to tyres the tubeless tyres have been reported to be functional for more than two hours without the drop in performance as tyre pressure is gradually lost.
The issues related to conventional tyres are greatly avoided by making use of tubeless tyres. But one needs to verify all the aspects before opting for tubeless tyres, as it is not always a feasible option. In small vehicles that are prone to regular wear and tear the use of tubeless tyres is possible but one has keep in mind the financial aspect as well. In the long run tube tyres may require lot of maintenances but can be a cheaper option when compared to the expensive tubeless tyres.
The tubeless tyres are functional only when the safety of contour on the rim is taken care of and air tightness is properly maintained.
